Oh, wow, psychoangel's gonna go gaga over these. These are great! Is that all of the art of the Toon Patrol from all these books?
And you have a copy of "A Different Toon"? I've been wanting a copy of that for ages! Please post the entirely of it! I'm assuming it's in English? I hope it is.
I must say, those two stickers of Stupid and Greasy make for some really bad art of them. The rest are quite good, if a little off-model. And I see that Stupid does play softball! Strange that because of his bat, he'd be associated with that sport. I never would have thought of Psycho as a pitcher, though- but I'm not surprised that he would throw a toony curve ball.

This is great!!! Thanks for putting it up^^ It's so nice to see them doing something that doesn't involve doom or dip in official stuff.... Look at 'em playing pools and softball XD They're slightly different in style but I say it's pretty well done. Thanks Greasy/Cecil!

I was very surprised to see art of them occupying themselves with leisurely activities. I mean, hardly anyone does that for any character- just showing them immersed in day-to-day activities. I personally think it's a mistake to forget to think of what would be mundane to a fictional character, because realistically, no living creature would have something exciting happen to them every day. The biggest benefit in doing this, I think, would be the realization of a fully-rounded personality. Obviously, this sort of thing isn't at all exciting, and wouldn't make for a good feature film or novel or anything like that- but I think if you were going to use a character more than once, especially for a long period, it'd be interesting to see what's ordinary to that character once in a while.
I'm not entirely sure why that sort of thing is fascinating to me, and I wouldn't know if anyone else is into it. I guess it's my love of exploration and discovery.
It's really no surprise that Smarta** and Greasy would play pool, since it's such an iconic symbol of low financial and moral status. That is, it's closely associated with hoodlums, crooks, and other lowbrow types. The zoot suit look was an outsider look, after all- it went against the thriftiness of the war period. (Also, I notice Greasy seems to be picking his teeth with the cue. Does it have a pointed end or something? Is he chewing on it or what?) I just love the way they have Stupid and Psycho out in some vacant lot with undoubtedly makeshift bases. It just reeks of that classic ghetto baseball/softball field that's so iconic as well. Since we all agree that Psycho and Stupid are the most childlike, it makes sense that they would be the ones who are the most physically active and would play outside.

Thanks again! I can't help but wonder what model sheets or clip art these people were using for the Roger Rabbit merchandise. Has anyone ever noticed how similar they often are? Particularly Wheezy with those whiskers, and Greasy with his striped pants. I'm referring to psychoangel's merchandise page, of course.

I think it started out with one person, and then the rest though "Oh! That must be what they looked like!" And then based their drawings on them.
I think I'm not the only one when I say I hate it when people draw the weasels, and they are horribly wrong. Though, I once read that in Germany, artists and producers made Greasy more fat and gave him striped pants, so though I'm a little steamed, that's how Europe views their hispanic weasel.
But for other pics, I think they really sould've tried better, and sometimes I question if they even actually watched the movie.

I seriously doubt they watched the movie. I've noticed a lot of similarities in the way the Toon Patrol are drawn in all this merchandise, so I suspect the artists were given outdated sketches or something. They all sort of look like those buttons with captions they released when the movie came out. I've seen those striped pants in almost all the merchandise I've seen, including the graphic novel adaptation of the movie. That one is certainly American... What I find weird is that Smarta** is the one that most often looks like he does in the movie. Perhaps he changed the least? I actually kind of like Wheezy's whiskers and Greasy's striped pants, but I don't like the way their heads are shaped so much. Greasy especially- they give him those fat, squishy lips. His lower lip is thicker than the others in the movie, but a lot of the art I've seen of him overdo it.
I kind of get the feeling that whoever wrote those two books- Make the World Laugh and A Different Toon- had seen the movie and knew exactly what to soften for the younger audience they were selling to. One reason I think that is that Judge Doom here looks almost clown-ish... I keep picturing him with this goofy, yet non-squeaky voice that doesn't inspire terror like Christopher Lloyd's performance at all. The Dip seems to be very understated, too- if you look at Cecil's images of Make the World Laugh, they only say it makes a toon "disappear forever". (They also get the formula wrong.) And besides the terrible caricature of Bob Hoskins, I notice Eddie laughs a lot more easily and earlier than he did in the movie.
I really, really wish the DVD had model sheets of the Toon Patrol. They've got a bunch of conceptual sketches where they severely exaggerate the Mr. Toad designs, and then they go onto generic mobsters, and then ZIP! straight into the color charts we see at the top of this forum. It'd be fantastic to see what Richard William's team used as reference... surely those color charts were only for the ink and paint department?

That's exactly what they would have been used for. They're color references so that everyone painted the right parts in the right colors.
I would have loved to have seen model sheets for them, too.

I agree. I defiantely agree with Greasy, he looks fat, and it ruined the mental picture of him, even when I watched the movie as a kid, i thought he was thin. I don't like the striped pants, i think it sticks out too much from his overall design. For the whiskers, eh.... 50/50 for me. It does seem though that Smartass was the least changed, only thing I ever seen of him messed up was with him in the red suite.
I also realized that it's Wheezy and Greasy that's the most commonly messed up. WIth the differance in skin and clothes, you'd think they'd be the least messed up since they stick out more, but then I'm wrong.
I think, and this is the worst to come in mind, that they maybe trashed the sheets, deleted them from any computer, they were corrupted, or they lost them. But that's the worst to come into mind.... or they were so valuable that they don't want to show it? Though I find that also differant, unless copyright laws or art theft appears.

I meant that his lips looked fat, and thus his face. I never really thought about it, but I do suppose that he does look fatter in the merchandise than he does in movie. I would definitely say that his belly has a much more subtle curve in the movie- sort of like a teardrop. He sort of droops towards the floor, and his center of gravity is low. Even his jacket seems heavier at the bottom... I wouldn't call him downright fat, though. More like pudgy or plump.
I seriously doubt they would've lost or gotten rid of their model sheets. For one thing, I don't recall any model sheets for any of the other characters... for some reason, most of the Disney model sheets I've found have been leaked onto the internet, which makes me wonder how much of that sort of thing is in the hands of private collectors...

Yeah, i can´t understand it, too, why they were changed. I don´t know the guy who has drawn them, but maybe the europe designers never saw the movie, cause I remember that when a movie came out in USA in the 80´s it came out here in germany 3 years later! So it could be that they have drawn the weasels after a describtion. What I have noticed at Greasy is that he his not so much fatter then in the movie. The stripes on his pants does give the feeling that he is, and his legs are longer then his legs in the movie are.
