Most of what are in the hands of private collectors are copies of model sheets. Very very few of them are 'masters'. And most of the copies have been smuggled out of the studio by employees and then later sold or even given away.
I have two Biker Mice From Mars cels and that's how I got them. The person who was selling them (for very cheap, actually.) knows one of the producers and they got hold of a great many of the cels during production. They were selling them because they'd just been sitting in a box in a closet since the mid-nineties. The most I paid for one was around $100 because it features all three main characters, their motorcycles and the scenes background.
