Finally, I get to post the good chapters!
Chapter 7: Maddy scared Stupid
Maddy, meanwhile, was still searching for Roger. She had searched for almost an hour, but there was no sign of the Toon rabbit. Just then, Maddy remembered one place she hadn’t looked.
Twenty minutes later, the little girl reached her destination: a huge lot. In the lot was a large, brick building. A neon sign read ‘Acme’. Maddy remembered it from her grandfather’s stories. This was where he had battled Doom and dispatched him.
“Maybe Roger’s in there,” she said to herself. However, there was something telling her she shouldn’t be here.
Maddy had heard rumors that the factory was haunted. She recalled her grandfather’s story about how he made Judge Doom’s weasel henchmen laugh themselves to death, literally. People had reported seeing the weasels’ apparitions in and around the factory.
The ten-year-old started to have second thoughts about searching for Roger in the factory. But then again, she couldn’t find Roger anywhere else. Taking a deep breath, she walked towards the door. She put her hand on the door, and then drew it away quickly. Looking around to make sure no one was in sight, she pushed the door open and stepped into the building.
The inside of the factory hadn’t changed much from sixty years before, except that the hole that the dip machine created had been bricked up again. The factory was littered with Toon props of all shapes and sizes. From itching powder to anvils, it was all there.
“Wow!” Maddy breathed. This place was huge!
Maddy could make out the faint, green dip stains on the concrete floor.
Just then, the young girl heard a noise that made her jump. She looked all around. Not a soul was in sight.
“Wh-who’s there?” Maddy called nervously.
There was no answer.
Now Maddy was getting scared. Her heart was pounding and her stomach gave a frightening lurch. I should get out of here, she thought. Then, she heard what sounded like footsteps coming from behind her.
“Roger?” Maddy said anxiously as she turned around. Somebody was there, but it was definitely NOT Roger!
It was a weasel, a Toon weasel. In his hands was a baseball bat with a nail through the top. The weasel seemed ready to take a swing at Maddy’s head!
“Aaaahhh!” Maddy screamed. She found herself backed up against a wall.
Maddy never took her eyes off the weasel. He was rather fat with googly eyes and a red beanie that gave him a rather comical look. One sharp tooth stuck out from his upper lip. He wore a blue and white striped t-shirt and white sneakers. His arms made him look strong enough to be able to pick Maddy up easily. The thing that about this Toon that frightened Maddy the most was the pale blue glow surrounding his body, and the fact that she could see right through him. Maddy knew this was the weasel called "Stupid" because she remembered his description from her grandfather's stories. It was at that moment that the girl realized that the rumors were true. The factory was haunted.
"Duh, boo!" Stupid said, trying to sound scary. "I'm a scary ghost!"
Maddy was too scared to move, or even speak.
The phantom moved closer to the frightened child. "Go away before I-whoa! Whoa!"
Stupid had stepped on a bunch of marbles and lost his balance. He slipped and fell to the floor, sliding on the marbles towards Maddy. He stopped just a few inches in front of her.
"Duh...boo?" he said lamely.
In her fright, Maddy did the only thing she could think of: she punched him in the nose.
"Yeowch!" the weasel cried out. His nose started throbbing in the classic Toon style.
Maddy stood up and took up a defensive stance. "I-I-I know what you did! You-you brainless, bug-eyed bully you!"
Stupid backed away from the young human.
"You tried to destroy Toon Town!" Maddy shouted, "You, and your friends! You got what you deserved when you died laughing!"
A look of utter defeat crossed Stupid's face. "Oh, I can't do anything right!" he wailed. He turned into a smoke-like substance and vanished.
I showed him! Maddy thought. She was about to make a hasty retreat when she heard a soft noise. Straining her ears, she realized it was the sound of someone crying.
Curious, Maddy followed the sound, even if it was against her better judgement. Behind some boxes, she found what was making the sound. It was Stupid, weeping. His tears rolled down his furry cheeks like waterfalls.
"I bumbled it again!" he wailed. "Now Smarty'll kick me outta the gang!"
Maddy remained out of sight.
"Smarty was right. I am a worthless idiot! I'll never scare anybody! I'll never get the others to like me! I'll never have any friends...never!"
Stupid, however, must have thought she meant to do him harm, because he suddenly backed away from the little girl and covered his face with his hands.
“It’s okay!” Maddy said gently, “I’m not gonna hurt you!”
Stupid peeked out from between his fingers.
“Maddy!” Roger called. He had searched everywhere for the child, even in mouse holes! “Jeepers! Where could she be?” he wondered aloud. And then it occurred to him. The Acme factory!
--
“Duh, I laughed too much,” Stupid said sheepishly. He seemed to have a look of regret on his face. “Duh, I knew I would die if I laughed too much, but I just couldn’t help myself. I died first, then Wheezy, then Smart Guy, then Greasy, and then Psycho. We all met up at the Pearly Gates, but…”
“But what?” Maddy asked.
“They locked us out,” Stupid said, hanging his head. His expression became one of sadness.
“Why?” Maddy asked.
“Because—,” Stupid paused and sniffled, “we did a bad thing!”
“What did you do?” Maddy asked.
“Me and the others were gonna help Judge Doom dip Toon Town so he could build a freeway.” Stupid replied sadly.
Maddy gasped. Judge Doom? Her suspicions were now confirmed. Stupid was one of the weasels that had worked for Doom! I’d better not tell him my last name! Maddy thought. “Why would you do such a thing?!” Maddy asked, a mix of anger and shock in her voice.
A pained look came over Stupid’s face. “Doom said he would give us ten percent of the profits if we helped him,” he whimpered. His eyes started filling up with tears. “The people up in Heaven said we couldn’t come in and they sent us back.” Tears started rolling down Stupid’s furry cheeks. “And now we have to haunt this place forever and ever and ever!” he wailed. And with that, he broke down sobbing. Whether his tears were because of his fate, or from remorse for his actions, Maddy wasn’t sure. The thing she was sure about was that Stupid’s weeping melted her heart. The anger she had been feeling towards him had vanished.
Maddy reached over and opened her magic backpack. “Handkerchief,” she said softly. She then reached in and pulled out a red handkerchief. Maddy then closed the backpack, and turned her attention back to the crying weasel.
Stupid felt a tap on his shoulder. Looking up, he saw Maddy holding out a handkerchief to him.
“Here,” Maddy said kindly.
Stupid just sat there and stared.
“Go on, take it!” Maddy insisted.
Stupid couldn’t believe it. He had just told of his unforgivable crime and eternal punishment. Why would this little girl be showing kindness to him? He reached out to take the handkerchief, but pulled his hand away.
Maddy shook her head in disbelief. “What’s the matter?!” she asked.
“Nobody’s ever been this nice to me before.” Stupid replied.
“Well, there’s always a first time for everything!” Maddy said with a smile.
Stupid took the handkerchief from Maddy. He dried his eyes, and then blew his nose. He handed the handkerchief back to the young human. Holding the now-snotty handkerchief between her thumb and index finger, Maddy made a face. She threw it away.
“Duh, thank you.” Stupid said gratefully.
The ten-year-old smiled as if to say ‘you’re welcome.’
Despite having an itty-bitty brain, Stupid knew in his heart (so to speak), that he had found a friend.
