She stared at her reflection in the mirror, looking for any flaw. There had been a huge downpour as soon as her bus reached the highway, and it continued to rain, so she was worried that her hair would be frizzy. After all, she had spent fifteen minutes straightening it before she left. Her make-up wasn't smeared. "Thank God for that," she said. Slightly adjusting her cap, she grabbed her bag and left the bathroom.
Finally, after twelve years, she was here. She was finally going to graduate. No more homework. No more horrible school lunches. No more kids making fun of her behind her back. No more teenage drama. Most of all, no more couples smooching in the hall. It sickened her every time she saw couples spending a few minutes together. She had never really dated before. Heck, she couldn't even make a guy look at her.
She was average looking. She hated her teeth. She hated her acne. Most of all, she hated her hair. She had very beautiful natural blond hair, thanks to genetics. But she hated it. People were always petting her hair and saying, "I wish I had your hair. I use different types of bleach and dye, but I can never make them look like yours!" Even the teachers had embarrassed her when she was younger. She liked it, in some way. Her hair gave her an advantage whenever she had a blond character in a play. No wigs! She mostly liked her eyes. A greenish-hazel color. It gave anyone chills when they stared at them.
When she had managed to give her bag to her mother, she went around the building to find her friends. She suspected that most of them would be late, thanks to the rain and the traffic. She found the senior vice president, who handed her a marble. "It's for our senior prank," he told her when she looked at him quizzically. "When we go up to receive our diplomas, we'll hand them to the principal." She silently nodded and walked past him, rolling the marble around with her fingers.
The senior vice president was a strange fellow. He was somewhat popular with the ladies, although it is likely that he is gay. Nothing personal, she respected those kind of people. This guy, however, takes it too far. He would come to school dressed up like a fairy princess, even though it wasn't Halloween or Spirit Week. There was even a moment when he wore rabbit ears. He had strange poses for pictures. His little fashion displays rightfully earned him the nickname "Fairy Boy", although he has yet to know it. Most of the time, he's an ass. Long story. Let's just say that she'll never forgive him. EVER.
"Hey! There you are," says someone from behind. It was one of her friends, "Salamander". She was a very sweet girl, though she has many different personalities. She had given her the nickname "Salamander" because of the way salamanders can regrow limbs. To put it simply, no matter how many people cut her down, Salamander will always come back. "So, have you seen him yet?" The girl gave Salamander a look. "No, I haven't. I'm already starting to shake." Salamander kindly patted her on the shoulder. "Don't worry, you'll be fine. He's a sweet guy. You know that." The girl moaned nervously. She started biting her nails, which was a bad habit of hers. She hardly noticed.
The rest of the gang showed up. They talked excitedly and went around taking pictures of each other. The girl looked around every few seconds. She froze. There he was, coming from the back door with his brother. He was so far away, but she could see the smile on his face as he went up to meet some friends of his. His smile. She twitched. "Oh my god, there he is." A red haired girl looked where she glanced at and smiled. "So, what are you going to do?" The girl looked down shyly and started shaking. "I...erm...not exactly sure. I'm not even sure if he watched the tape or read the cards yet." A few days before, she had wrote her confession on a total of 80 note cards and made a short movie. It had music playing and everything. The only problem was if he had the right video camera to play the tape.
Her friend frowned and snapped, "Stop being a pussy and just tell him!" Don't judge her. Her friend was actually nice. She had helped her boost her confidence and gave her advice on boys. She was even the person who introduced her to the smiling boy, which changed her life. "O-okay. I'll try," she said.
She stuck around with her friends for a few minutes, then quickly walked away and went to the other side of the building. The moment she went up to him, she immediatley walked passed him and went to greet the band. She cursed under her breath and slowly turned around. Keeping her gaze straight ahead, she walked up to him again. When she stood next to him, her eyes snapped to his face. "Oh! Hi! Fancy walking into you!" He looked at her and flashed his smile. All thoughts in her head quickly went away. Oh, crap, she thought. She felt her whole body jerk. She gave him a clumsy smile. Smiling was never her best trait. The smiling award went to him.
"So...um...is it alright-" she started, when his mother came up to them. "Son, can I have you stand next to this group so I can take a picture?" The boy looked back at the girl and apologized before he walked with his mother. The girl shook again. Get a hold of yourself! You still have time before the ceremony begins! She walked into the crowd and found the boy with a group of other graduates. They were doing silly poses in front of the camera. The girl couldn't help but laugh. Being silly was one of several things a serious Drama student can do. She knew that from her classes! When they were finished, she walked up to the boy again. "I'm sorry, but I'm going to need a few more photos. You, could you stand next to my son," said the mother. The girl nodded and walked off. The girl wasn't familiar with the boy's parents, but she knew his mother's hobby was photography. She had been in every production her sons were in, constantly taking pictures. They were good pictures, too.
A few pictures later, the girl finally went back up to him. She nervously tugged at his sleeve, a trick she learned from reading her manga books. Apparently, guys find it really cute when a girl does that. "Sorry to bother you, but could I please talk to you alone for a few minutes?" She blushed as she said this. Before they could walk off, her red haired friend and a guy that the girl knew from Drama class came up to them with a camera. "Hey, could I get a picture of you two with him?" The guy, who she called "The Majestic Eagle", an inside-joke, stood next to the boy. The girl sighed and joined the two boys. The three of them did a silly pose as her friend took the picture. As she busied herself over her camera with the Majestic Eagle, the girl grabbed the right arm of the boy and quickly led him away from the group.
They walked side-by-side for a few minutes, chatting about how exciting it was to be graduating. The girl was hot, temperature wise & from her incredible shyness. Now was the time. As she turned to face him, the boy spotted a friend of his and excused himself. The girl twitched again. She went up to the boy and told him to meet her over at an abandoned corner when he was done. As soon as she was alone, she paced in circles and started cursing herself. Things were not going as planned. She started rehearsing her lines, as she usually does before a show, except this time it had to do with real life and not a play. When she was sure that she was comfortable with her words, she turned to meet up with the boy; but, he was gone. She quietly and pathetically called his name, frantically looking around in case he was still nearby.
She walked around the building and found him again posing for pictures for his mother. There was a whole group of people with him. The girl stifled a groan. When the mother was done, the girl went up to her and said, "Excuse me, but I would really like to talk to your son alone for just a few minutes please." The mother found it an odd request, but allowed her to take her son. Just in case, she told his brother as well so that they wouldn't be interrupted. In the back of her mind she thought of the ride home, how his mother would turn to look at him and say, "You know that friend of yours? She's a really odd girl. She asked me if she could have you alone, just like when she wanted an interview with you after your school musical!" Or worse, she would think of her as selfish. True, but the thought made her stomach turn, which was already tight from nerves.
As soon as they were back at the lonely corner, the girl turned toward him. "I just want you to know that you're a really nice guy...and-" "Yo! I found you, you little weasels!" The girl jumped and turned to face her red haired friend and the Majestic Eagle. "I looked away for one minute and when I turn back, you guys ditched! I can't believe you! Well, I guess we're going to have to do the picture here!" The girl glared at her friend. The red haired girl found someone to take their picture and they posed. A normal pose. The girl was less enthusiastic than she was earlier. Just to annoy her friend, she crossed her arms. She suddenly felt a hand on her shoulder. She looked and saw that the hand belonged to the boy. She blushed slightly and tried to smile. She was too nervous to smile, so she sneered instead. Better than crossing her arms.
The picture was done. The red haired girl collected her camera and turned to face her friends. The girl, making sure that the boy wouldn't see, made signs to tell her friend and the Majestic Eagle to go away. Luckily, her friend got the hint and collected the Majestic Eagle, saying something like, "Whoa, let's go and see the band! They sure are awesome!" There was an awkward silence. The girl turned to face the boy once more. Her nerves racked her body. "Just so you know, you're a really nice guy. Don't let others put you down, because...because they're just f-bleep!- jealous of you! And...and...I...I-"
"ATTENTION GRADUATES, IT IS TIME FOR YOU TO LINE UP AND PREPARE FOR THE CEREMONY. I REPEAT, LINE UP AND PREPARE FOR THE CEREMONY."
"I guess it's time to go," said the boy. The girl nodded slowly. The boy ran ahead to catch up to his brother. The girl went ahead as well, standing far behind the boy with her head down. She was on the verge of tears. Her friends were in front of her as soon as she entered the line. The chatted happily and nervously. Salamander and "The Romanian Chick/Dude" turned toward her to chat, when they noticed the look on her face. "Is everything okay?" they asked. The girl nodded, then hugged Romanian Chick/Dude and choked down her sobs. "I can't do this! I can't do this! Every time I try, every time I get a chance alone with him, someone comes to take a picture with him! I just don't have the guts to do this!" Her friends took her aside and encouraged her. She was brave to do this, they said. Brave. Admitting your feelings was brave? She never believed that. Being brave was facing up to your own fears. Standing against the enemy. Fighting, despite the dangers ahead. That was what she believed was bravery. Confessing your feelings to someone was just a normal thing to do. To be honest, she was afraid. The girl had confessed her feelings to other guys many times before, and every time, she was rejected. Worse, she lost their friendship. She didn't want to lose his. Either way, he had the tape and cards. He would see them later. But she wanted to say them with her own voice. She knew that she would regret it if she didn't.
They lined up in a small hall away from the parents and teachers. It was crowded. The saying "like a can of sardines" fit perfectly here. She stood at the very back on her side of the hall, where minutes later she would meet up with her partner, the Majestic Eagle, and walk with him. She turned her head and saw the boy in front of her. She knew that after the ceremony she wouldn't be able to say anything more to him, and maybe never again, because she had to board the bus back to the school. It was now or never. She slowly walked over to him, her legs feeling like they would give out any moment. Secretly, and selfishly, she hoped they would, and that he would catch her. Repeating her trick, she tugged at his sleeve. His eyes locked onto hers. Her nerves fried her brain. Before she regained her thoughts, her mouth spoke, "Is it alright if you could hold me until the ceremony starts?" He raised his eyebrows and made a weird "er" sound. Oh...S**T! "I, I mean, just for a little while?! I mean...I...Er..." He gave a nervous chuckle. "Would you like me to hold your hand instead? I know you're nervous, but, holding you until the ceremony? That's...that's a bit odd." She shook her head no, and he turned away to chat with his brother.
She had screwed up. There was nothing she could do to recover. It was all ruined.
She looked hopelessly in his direction, sinking into the wall behind her and trying not to cry, when she saw Salamander looking at her. No, not just looking. Boring her eyes into her, a serious look on her face. She mouthed, "DO. IT. NOW."
The girl took a deep breath. She walked up behind the boy, grabbed him by the shoulders, turned him around, and hugged him tightly. She closed her eyes even more tightly than the grip she had on him and whispered in his ear, unknowingly nuzzling his neck, "I really like you, Kaleb. I've liked you ever since I met you this year. I'm so sorry. I like you. I just want you to know that. I like you. I like you. I'm sorry. I like you." Her body went completely numb. She had no idea where she was, who she was, and what she was doing. All she knew was that someone gave a small nervous laugh and hugged her. Was he stroking her back? She wasn't sure. The world was black in her vision. She smelled something familiar. A very comforting smell. She felt and heard someone expel breath. She opened her eyes and let go of him. It took all the nerves she had left to look him in the eyes.
"Kel...I...I think you're a great person. You are. But I have a girl who's really great-"
"I know. I know that. I'm sorry."
"I really like her. I want you to know that."
And with that, he turned back towards his brother. The girl felt nothing else. She suddenly couldn't recollect what had just happened, but she knew one thing. She was rejected. She knew she would be. Salamander looked at her and told her calmly that she had done great. The girl nodded, but couldn't care less. She sank back to the wall, oblivious to the next fifteen minutes before the ceremony.
She had sat down as soon as the pledge and colors were over. Her heart hurt. She felt lightheaded. She didn't care about the graduation. He knew now. He knew. He would never talk to her again. He would always feel awkward towards her. He was a very nice boy, the nicest she ever met, but all boys grew uncomfortable towards girls who secretly love them. It was over. No more conversations together. No more practicing lines together. No more sharing laughs together. Nothing. It would be the same as the others. Always the same. She clutched at her chest and tried not to cry. She looked towards Salamander, who sat a few seats next to her, and she smiled at her, waving her fan towards her face. Salamander silently mouthed, "I'm proud of you."
At last, when they reached the end of the ceremony, the principal announced the graduates to stand and run to their positions for the ceremony of the throwing of the hats. When the girl left and raced to get to her spot, she stole a glimpse towards the boy. He saw her and smiled. Her heart thumped in her chest. She had hope that they would see each other again. A feeling of destiny? Maybe, maybe not. She returned the smile and yelled, "We're free!" Minutes later, they tossed their hats into the air. Time slowed down, and the girl thought, "I may not have won his heart, but it was destiny that I met him. Yes. This happiness was meant for me and for me only. Yes. Thank you." The hats hit the floor.

I was just bored when I wrote this. I've seen a lot of movies and read a lot of mangas where the girl confesses her love to a guy and it utterly fails. Interesting enough, most of the time it's before the guy leaves (the graduation ones are popular). I made a scenario and gave it a whirl. I hope you enjoyed this story about a very brave girl.
P.S. The poll is just for fun. Also, I meant "it" instead of "if".
NOTE: Holy cow, I had to keep editing this when I looked over it. I am so tired! D=
