Blah, I haven't been here in a quite a while... just thought I'd drop by to post this (which I also posted in my Journal on my DeviantArt page), because it may be helpful to somebody out there:
"My interest in psychology is one of the reasons I love making various OCs. I've picked up a few things (without any guides) along the way, that I'd just like to share with anyobdy who might care. I didn't mean to rhyme on that.
Notes: There are three things that make up a complete character besides likes and dislikes and appearances. The first is the very basic, subtle personality you're born with, or your nature. Your nature has no logic; it's like a permanent mood that can be erased through experience, if not nurtured. It marks the difference between 'good' babies and 'bad' babies.
The second is experience. Your childhood experiences are the ones that really stick and shape your personality, because back then, you're still figuring out the world and figuring out yourself. Example: if you grew up in a bad neighborhood where everybody is trying to kill you, chances are you're going to be paranoid throughout life, and you probably worry a lot. If you grew up in a poor place where money means everything, then you're probably stingy and may put your job above your friends. IE: If you're going to make a character egotistical or sensitive or really optimistic... do it for a bloody reason. Do. It. For. A. Reason. People who don't use logic with their characters... well, I shouldn't care because they're probably a bit stupid, but it still bugs me because that's just not how people work. You're probably not going to find a really happy, optimistic, sensitive, carefree person in a trashy ghetto full of gun-toting gangbangers. Of course there are exceptions; but those exceptions also have reasons to exist.
The third is simply the ability to want. I admit I did get this from a guide; but it made me realize that nobody ever stops wanting anything. Even when you have nothing to want, you want to want something. Here, this guy explains it more convincingly: mpoor.deviantart.com/art/Breathing-life-into-OCs-Part2-207588610 "
Anyway; I hope everybody I know on this forum is well, since I've been a bit too sidetracked to come back often and check. I was going to make a reappearance here a week ago, but I've just moved to a new place irl and didn't have any internet access.
