Since the diamond-on-the-tie thing does represent stereotypical mob/gangster bosses, he probably swiped it from somebody he... defeated. Keep in mind that the TP is modeled after 30's and 40's gangbangers and mobsters.

Now see that makes more sense! I like that you've pin-pointed the earlier mob stories. It's plain to see that one might have stolen it. BUT you know that Mobs also had a tendency to own big businesses. He might have also had money to make up for his thievery. This is something I learned over time, while role playing with a friend of mine, Kari.
