That's the first time I've heard of someone dressing up as one of their own characters...

Oh cool I was about to plan on dressing as either Maria Valiant or Vanessa Valiant.
I don't really know but it depends if they have some more costumes on HotTopics.

Well, I dunno about that... I wouldn't feel right if I did it. I don't know about you, but I'd feel like I was tooting my own horn. Not to say that you are, of course.

I know many people who dress as their own characters, and not just for Halloween. Many people sink thousands into making mascot quality costumes of their personal characters.
Why?
Mostly for fun. If I had the means, I would make some for my characters.
I know some of the people take them around and visit children's hospitals and the like.

What, you mean furries? I always thought that was supposed to be some alter ego instead of an original character used in a full-fledged story. Then again, most of what I see of furries can't possibly be very representative.

fatal: furries are VERRRY diverse. some of them take it really seriously, like where they believe they have the spirit of an animal. some of them (like me) just enjoy roleplaying and furry art. i wouldn't mind having a costume, either. i bet that's fun.

Harley is correct. Many people wind up labeled as 'furry' even when they don't really belong to the group. There are the whackos, who are often the ones that mainstream media grabs and points at, but then there are the quiet people who go on with what they like. Some of it's downright creepy and weird, but then there are parts of almost every fandom that are creepy. I don't understand the people who think they really are an animal trapped in a human body. o.O I'm not an animal, I'm a person. I have just always liked animals, had many pets and enjoyed animated shows. Many animated shows substitute animal characters in place of people, so that led me to drawing similar critters. I don't know why so many people think you can't possibly have a real character with their own personality that you would enjoy playing around with by dressing up. I have a few pirate characters I'd really find fun to 'play' as! They've got great personalities for a start, and interesting looks for another.

Yeah, I get all that about furries- I've seen some of all those types. I'm just saying that I've never heard of somebody dressing up as an original character of theirs that wasn't purely an extension of themselves- a fictional character for almost purely artistic use as opposed to an alter ego. I'm not saying it's a bad thing, it's just new to me...
In my case, it's just that when it comes to my own characters, they may be partially based on myself, but somehow or another having them be mine makes me feel like I shouldn't do anything with them other than let them be themselves. I've enjoyed playing characters for Halloween, but my acting abilities are very different from my writing abilities. For some reason I'm not comfortable with the idea of those crossing over, now that I think about it, but that's just me... I think part of it comes from knowing exactly what I want in a character but not necessarily being able to act it out to my satisfaction. There are some exceptions where I can do their voices, but most of the time I have an image and a sound in my head that I wouldn't be able to do outside of pencil and paper or typing on a computer.

I suppose you would have to seriously enjoy getting 'in character' and acting to find the fun in playing one of your own characters. And yes, Demo, I want to see pics.

I do enjoy getting into character- just not the ones I write about. When it comes to acting, I'm more of a comic character actor, but my original characters tend to be a bit more serious and have a lot more depth to them. Not only do I not think I'm capable to deep acting, my vision is far too specific and beyond my range for me to able to do it. Besides, I often want to hire other people to do them anyway. People who would be better at it than I am.

I know how you feel about stuff like that, Fatal. I'd rather be a character one of my friends made up for Halloween (Only for Halloween and for her friends) then my own characters.

Awesome picture. I'm shocked at how good you are at drawing humans! Really, this is cool.
For some odd reason, I get the feeling he's thinking, "Hmm...you shall I kill next?" X3
